 History & Location
Craig Springs is located in the heart of the Jefferson National Forest on Route 658 twelve miles west of New Castle, Virginia. Craig Springs is nestled in the scenic, mountainous John’s Creek Valley at the base of the Pott’s Mountain ridge. The buildings hold a great deal of historical significance. It is believed that the old Craig Hotel (now called Central) was built between 1889-1900 and remodeled the summer of 1900 doubling its capacity. Soon, a whole cluster of resort hotels sprung up in the area and enjoyed greater and lesser degrees of success over the years until after World War Two when vacationers started flocking to the beaches instead of the mountains.
Meanwhile, the Virginia Christian Missionary Society (now the Christian Church in Virginia) was looking to either develop or purchase a campsite for its growing outdoor ministry and conference program. In 1960 the Christian Church in Virginia purchased the 460 acre tract for use as a camp and retreat center. Since that time, guests and campers have not only experienced the healing springs, they have experienced the healing and growing power of the good news of Jesus Christ.
