Rev. Clayton Boyd, born April of 1956 in Norfolk, Virginia to Carl and Alice Boyd. He is the third of four children. His sister, Linda, only lived six days. Brother David lives in Idaho and Steven lives in North Carolina. Rev. Boyd’s father was a native of eastern North Carolina, a 23-year Air Force veteran, who passed away in 1973. Alice is a native of Richmond, now living in an Alzheimer’s unit in Virginia Beach.
As an Air Force ‘brat,’ Clayton lived in Norfolk, Ft Lee, New York, Germany, Colorado and Washington DC before his father moved to Virginia Beach for retirement, where Clayton attended high school. Rev. Boyd graduated from Lynchburg College with a double major in Philosophy and Religious Studies. He went on to Lexington Theological Seminary but elected to take a break from school before completing his work.
Clayton joined the US Navy and became an intelligence analyst, serving in Lexington Park, MD, on the carrier Midway while stationed in Japan, the Atlantic Intelligence Command in Norfolk, and as the Intelligence Officer for a Navy SEAL Unit in Scotland. He was decorated with the Joint Service Commendation, the Navy Commendation, Naval Achievement Medal, and many others.
After twelve years exploring the world, Clay once again acknowledged God’s call on his life and returned to Lexington to finish his Master’s of Divinity. He was ordained a minister in 1997 with the Christian Church (Disciple’s of Christ). Rev. Boyd has served churches in Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois.
Preferring to be called ‘Clay’, he is a strong advocate for youth in the church and community. He has recently been a camp counselor for the church’s regional camp near Roanoke and is working on developing a Junior High Retreat to occur sometime later this year. However, being middle-aged, Clay is also very good with the elders of the congregation, visiting them in the hospitals, nursing homes, and private residences. It is his hope to have a long and fruitful stay in Colonial Heights.
